Two tables of contents live in every EPUB
EPUB3 books carry nav.xhtml; EPUB2 books carry toc.ncx; many books carry both for compatibility. A reader that finds one broken or empty shows no chapters — or worse, shows entries that lead nowhere.
Rebuilding writes both documents from the same chapter list, in the same order, with the same titles. Whatever your reader reads, it gets a working TOC.
What the rebuilt TOC looks like
One flat entry per chapter in spine order, titled after each chapter's own heading. Deeply nested TOCs with volume/part levels are flattened — that is the trade-off for a TOC that always works everywhere.
How to fix an EPUB table of contents
Select your EPUB file
Open the book from your device. Its chapters are read locally and listed as a preview of the new TOC.
Review the preview
Check the chapter list — this is exactly what the new table of contents will contain, in reading order.
Download the fixed EPUB
Save the file. Both nav.xhtml and toc.ncx are rebuilt, so any reader shows the working TOC.
Frequently asked questions
Hand editing, buggy exporters and format conversions are the usual suspects: anchors pointing at deleted files, empty nav documents, or an NCX that a converter silently mangled. If the file won't open at all, run it through the EPUB repair tool first.
